Carbon peeling for a more even-looking complexion
A carbon peel involves applying a thin carbon-containing lotion to cleansed skin and then treating it with a suitable laser. The procedure is mainly offered for oily skin, visibly enlarged pores and mild textural irregularities. It may give the complexion a temporarily fresher or more even appearance, but evidence remains limited compared with established acne treatments.
Suitability and skin assessment
Skin type, treatment goal, acne severity, current skincare, medication and previous laser procedures are reviewed before treatment. Active infection, open or markedly inflamed skin and sunburn require postponement. Unexplained pigmented lesions are not treated cosmetically and need dermatological assessment first. Acne requiring treatment should be addressed within an appropriate medical plan.
Treatment process
After cleansing, a thin carbon lotion is applied and allowed to settle or dry. It is then treated in controlled passes with a laser suitable for the procedure. Laser-rated eye protection is required for the patient and staff; settings and number of passes depend on the device, skin type and area.
Aftercare and sun protection
Temporary redness, warmth, sensitivity or dryness may occur. Initially, cleanse gently and follow the individual skincare instructions. Pause exfoliation, acids, retinoids, intense heat and strong UV exposure; broad-spectrum SPF 50+ helps reduce additional pigment changes. Blistering or persistent symptoms require medical review.
Outcomes, evidence and possible risks
Published evidence consists mainly of small observational studies and does not establish durable effects or superiority over established treatments. Changes in visible pores, oiliness, acne or pigment irregularities vary, and several sessions may be considered. Risks include redness, pain, pigment changes, blistering, burns, infection and scarring. A particular “glow” or permanent pore reduction cannot be promised.
