Laser treatments

Laser treatment to fade tattoos and permanent makeup

During laser treatment, suitable colour pigments absorb short light pulses and break into smaller particles, which the body gradually clears. How well a tattoo or permanent makeup fades depends on its colours, depth, density, layering, skin type and individual response. Several sessions are usually needed, and complete removal is not always possible.

Suitability, colours and test treatment

Assessment covers the type and age of the tattoo, colours, size, location, previous treatments, skin type, scars, pigment reactions, medication and sun exposure. Any suspicious mole or unexplained skin change within a tattoo requires dermatological assessment first. Flesh-coloured, white, orange or red pigments and permanent makeup can darken or change colour unexpectedly, so a small test area may be appropriate.

Treatment and session intervals

The wavelength is selected according to pigment colour; one laser does not treat every colour equally. After cleansing and applying suitable eye protection, settings are adjusted to skin type, area and previous response. Adequate intervals between sessions allow the skin to heal and the immune system to process treated pigment particles.

Aftercare and UV protection

Temporary whitening, redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, blistering or crusting may occur. Keep the area clean as instructed and do not open blisters or pick crusts. Avoid sun and tanning beds, and protect healed skin consistently with broad-spectrum SPF 50+. Increasing pain, marked redness or signs of infection require prompt medical review.

Outcomes and possible risks

The number and success of sessions vary considerably, and some tattoos need many treatments. Individual colours may remain, darken or fade only partially. Complete removal without scarring cannot be guaranteed. Possible risks include lighter or darker pigmentation, blisters, burns, infection, texture changes, scarring and a visible residual pigment shadow.
