Botulinum toxin for expression lines
Botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce activity in selected facial muscles, making dynamic expression lines appear softer. The area, product and dose are chosen according to anatomy, muscle activity and a realistic treatment goal while taking the individual’s natural expression into account.
Who may be suitable?
Treatment may be suitable mainly for movement-related lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the outer eyes. Lines visible at rest or caused by volume loss respond differently and may require another approach. Assessment covers medical conditions, medication, previous toxin treatments, pregnancy or breastfeeding, inflammation, infection and neuromuscular disorders. Approved treatment areas vary by product; any off-label use is explained separately.
How treatment is performed
The consultation assesses facial movement, symmetry and the requested change. After cleansing and marking the area, the physician injects small amounts into selected muscles; the number of points and dose depend on the area and findings. Units from different botulinum toxin products are not directly interchangeable.
Aftercare
Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or small bruises may occur. Follow the individual instructions and initially avoid pressing or massaging the treated areas unless advised otherwise. The effect cannot be assessed immediately; follow-up depends on the treatment plan. Pronounced muscle weakness, visual changes, or difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing require urgent medical attention.
Expected effects and possible risks
The change develops gradually over several days and is temporary; its extent and duration vary. Possible effects include headache, asymmetry, dry eyes and unintended weakening of nearby muscles, which may lower a brow or eyelid. Hypersensitivity or effects beyond the injection area can occur rarely. A particular result or fixed duration cannot be guaranteed.
